This document provides requirements for security of attachment for clothing components of infant clothing. It covers attachments that are considered as small parts, such as buttons, press fasteners, rivets, sequins and diamantes which fit entirely within the 'small parts cylinder' without compression. Release of these small components from clothing is considered to present hazards for infants of choking, swallowing, ingestion, inhalation (aspiration) or insertion into eyes, nose or ears. This document is to be read in conjunction with EN 17394-2 and CEN 17394-3 and -4. Annex A.5 stipulates a minimum detachment (pull-off) force for attachments of 70 N for textiles compared to 90 N for toys. This requirement is based on best achievable technology in the garment making industry and very close monitoring of complaints for detachment, not just accidents alone.
