ASTM D3039 determines the in-plane tensile properties of polymer matrix composite materials reinforced by high-modulus fibers. A number of calculations can be made including ultimate tensile strength, ultimate tensile strain, tensile chord modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. The data is often used to specify this type of material, to design parts to withstand application force and as a quality control check of polymer matrix composite materials.
Before conducting ASTM D3039, it is important to read the entire specification. Standards can be obtained from appropriate standard authorities.
