ASTM D5766 is a test method to determine the open-hole tensile strength of multidirectional polymer matrix composite laminates reinforced by high-modulus fibres. The composite material forms are limited to continuous-fibre or discontinuous-fibre (tape or fabric, or both) reinforced composites in which the laminate is balanced and symmetric with respect to the test direction.
ASTM D5766 is commonly used in the aerospace industry as a practice to develop notched design allowable strengths. It is used to generate data where the final application of the product may require fastener holes or to simulate a flaw in a material component.
Before conducting ASTM D5766, it is important to read the entire specification. Standards can be obtained from appropriate standard authorities.
