Cord, rope and netting all rely on their inherent strength to perform the essential tasks of tying, lifting and dragging. Made from natural and synthetic fibres or metal alloys in the case of wire rope, the twist of the strands serves not only to keep a rope together, but enables it to more evenly distribute tension among the individual strands. Without any twist in the rope, the shortest strands would always be supporting a much higher proportion of the total load and would be susceptible to premature breaking.
Often used in safety-critical applications it is vital to characterise performance by conducting tensile strength tests on these products. From 'fall arrest' safety nets to marine fishing nets right through to drawstring cords for garments, it is the strength and flexibility of the cord and rope which makes them safe and effective to use.
